Grief doesn’t effect us in the same ways. The primary one is grief, as already mentioned above. There are several themes here to discuss! His simple acceptance of Rumi and her darkness, and his understanding of her explosive emotions is worth so much. Yet it is Mr Watanabe, the grouchy neighbour, whom I liked the most. Kai and his friends are like balls of sunshine tumbling around, making things brighter and happier for Rumi. Saying, I felt desperately sad for her at Rumi’s constant outpourings of hatred towards her. It isn’t until the end that we realise the reason behind it, but even then, I can’t say I agree with what she did. I couldn’t understand her motives for leaving Rumi to her own devices in Hawaii, but that is purposeful by the author. The more memories we see, the more I liked her. She is kind and generous to a fault, always putting her sister first, always ensuring her happiness over her own. Lea is loveable straight away, through Rumi’s perspective. Though Lea isn’t alive during the course of the novel, she does feature in the flashbacks, and is, after Rumi, the primary character. True, I didn’t always enjoy her as a character, but I respected her, and sometimes that’s just as vital. Rumi has lost the most important person in her life, and I respected the grief process she went through.

Not everyone is likeable all the time, particularly at such a harrowing, awful time when they lose somebody close to them. My first thought = she’s an angry soul! But that’s part of what makes her so real. Rumi is the main character in Summer Bird Blue. In a book shop I would totally be directed to this book by the cover. Blue is my favourite colour, and the curling wave, the colours and the birds… it’s adorable and I love it. This is what drew me to the book on Net Galley. I have so many things to say about this beautiful novel! I’ll break it down into readable chunks. But how is she supposed to do that when their shared love of music and writing sons will never be shared again?įilled with anger and rage, Rumi knows she has to find her back to music, and back to Lea.Īnd there are a street full of people willing to help her to do it. She and Lea shared a love of music, and Rumi knows that she has to finish their last song, to honour Lea. Her whole world has changed, and to make it somehow even more terrible, she is being sent to Hawaii with her Aunty Ani, to allow her Mom to heal alone. The worst thing in the world has just happened to Rumi.
